Used for centuries in Turkish hamams, or baths, the pestemal (pesh-te-mahl) is the original “Turkish Bath Towel”. They are a soft and smooth, flat woven cloth, made by hand, usually from cotton, finished with fringes. The hand or hair towel size is called a peskir (pesh-kir).

These towels are known for their eco-friendly properties:

Highly absorbent, quick to dry, and will not collect sand

Not yet used where I plan to use it most

I bought this as a thin, light towel to have on my sailboat and for beach use. It is surprisingly thin, which is good for taking up very little space and, I imagine, for quick drying time. Directions say to let it soak in cold water a good while, then hang to dry and soak again and dry in the dryer for optimal absorbancy. I've done my version of that and have yet to use it as a towel to dry off with. The folks at Marmara seem dedicated to their product and interested in the customer having a good experience, which is nice.

Still an unknown

I bought this towel to take on an overseas trip, and as I've not yet taken the trip, I've not used the towel. The construction does appear to be good enough, although a little thinner than I would normally like (in this use, however, it is acceptable as it will be lighter and take less space for travel). Its absorbency is yet unknown. I mostly intend to use it if I spend any time at a beach, hoping it will give some measure of insulation from the sand, provide some moisture absorption, and dry quickly.
